Reggie, a Bird of Paradise Plant or Strelitzia Reginae, is, without doubt, a member of the 'plant hall of fame' - basically, he's one of the most well-known and popular houseplants you'll find.
If you didn't know already, Reggie gets his common name, Bird of Paradise, from the shape of his flowers, which look almost exactly like a bird of paradise - clever right?
Native to South Africa, Reggie can reach as tall as 4m with leaves each reaching 2m in length, meaning he makes a real statement. He can get so big in fact, that instead of being pollinated by insects, it's actually sunbirds that do the work!
Reggie, Bird of Paradise
Reggie prefers bright indirect light without prolonged exposure to direct sun - a touch of morning sunlight wouldn’t go a miss. Kenny doesn’t mind a touch of shade, but he’ll do best near a window.
If you’re not sure what level of light you have, check the shadows cast by your plant:
- Minimal shadow = lower light
- Half shadow = indirect light
- Full shadow = direct sun
