Ivan, an Aspidistra or Cast Iron Plant , is another well-known classic. It's not his shape or colour that's put him in the hall of fame, however, instead, it's his almost invincible nature.
Ivan's been familiar in the UK since Victorian times, where he was favoured because he was happy in gloomy 19th-century homes.
They’re basically indestructible, so if you forget to water him or even leave him in a dark spot, he'll adapt. The reason he's bulletproof is that he's used to growing in the shade under larger trees in China and Vietnam.
Ivan, Cast Iron Plant
Ivan can cope with any light conditions you throw at him, ranging from bright sunlight all the way down to shady corners.
If you’re not sure what level of light you have, check the shadows cast by your plant:
- Minimal shadow = lower light
- Half shadow = indirect light
- Full shadow = direct sun
