Patsy, a Pineapple Plant, Ananas Amigo, or Dwarf Pineapple Plant, has to be one of the best ways to add some tropical flair to your home.
Just like their big sisters, they bear fruit, but they're much smaller and more bitter fruit than those we’re used to seeing in the supermarket. You could eat them, but it might not be the tastiest fruit you've ever tried!
Native to South America, Patsy is part of the Bromeliad family, containing more than 3500 known species. That's one big family! Interestingly, when Patsy matures, her pineapple drops off and she's unlikely to produce a new one. But, and a big but, you can plant the pups in the soil which will, in turn, grow into whole new plants.
Patsy, Pineapple Plant
Patsy prefers bright indirect light to partial shade, without prolonged exposure to direct sun - a touch of morning sunlight wouldn’t go a miss.
If you’re not sure what level of light you have, check the shadows cast by your plant:
- Minimal shadow = lower light
- Half shadow = indirect light
- Full shadow = direct sun
