Val, a Variegated String of Pearls, Curio Rowleyanus, or Senecio Rowleyanus Variegata, is a succulent with you guessed it, trailing stems of pearl-like foliage. Unlike his cousin Percival, a standard String of Pearls, Val is blessed with greens, creams, and subtle pink markings, which are nothing short of beautiful!
Native to South Africa, Val is part of the Asteraceae family, which funnily enough is the same as the Daisy – if and when he flowers, make sure to give him a sniff because they smell like cinnamon – amazing right?
Don’t worry if Vernon takes his time growing – because he’s lucky enough to have variegation it means that he can’t absorb light as efficiently for energy production. He’s worth the wait though, trust us!

Val prefers bright indirect light, without prolonged exposure to direct sun - a touch of morning sunlight however would be welcomed.
If you’re not sure what level of light you have, check the shadows cast by your plant:
- Minimal shadow = lower light
- Half shadow = indirect light
- Full shadow = direct sun
