Erin, a Vriesea Era, displays long strap-shaped leaves with gorgeous deep maroon and green stripes. If that wasn't enough, she'll show off with luminous orange-red spearhead bracts (flower-like bit on top!).
Native to Brazil, Erin is an epiphyte, which means she naturally grows up trees and on rocks. The family of plants, Vriesea, was first noted by John Lindley in 1843 who honoured Willem Hendrik de Vriese, a Dutch botanist during the mid-17th-century.
Erin, Vriesea Era
Erin prefers bright indirect light to partial shade, without prolonged exposure to direct sun - a touch of morning sunlight wouldn’t go a miss.
If you’re not sure what level of light you have, check the shadows cast by your plant:
- Minimal shadow = lower light
- Half shadow = indirect light
- Full shadow = direct sun
