PRODUCT PROJECT

Camping Refrigeration Unit

This project set out to explore the problems associated with existing camping refrigeration units. The main flaws identified were cross contamination amongst food types, retrieving items and avoiding crushing. Research explored thermoelectric cooling, this principle converts electrical energy into useful heat energy. A Peltier is an electrical plate like device that uses this technology in generating a hot and cold surface on each side. Design development led to looking at ways in which both the hot and cold sides could be harnessed, reducing energy wastage and creating a secondary use of a hot water tank. Cross contamination and retrieving items were resolved through compartmentalisation, this improves organisation and prevented items from being crushed; the internal compartments are made from stainless steel this optimises conductivity and improved cooling.

SYSTEMS PROJECT

Bumblebee Conservation

Bumblebees are in a constant battle in foraging for pollen and nectar due to our ever-growing urban landscape that occupies what used to be wild flower meadows. This project explored ways in which a system could resolve the problems surrounding poor plant biodiversity and Bumblebee nesting sites. Gardens are some of the only spaces left with some biodiversity, and even so they aren't being fully utilised, are frequently managed incorrectly and don't harbour bee friendly floral species.

The Let It Bee Bumblebee care pack provides a nesting site and bee friendly seed selection. The nest is made from  moss coated terracotta. The spherical shape of the nester optimises air circulation, the moss provides a good insulation layer, a suitable nesting material and enables it to blend in with the natural surroundings. Bumblebees don't see red wave lengths the red translucent viewing screen enables the user to observe the Bumblebee nest without disturbance. The accompanying seedballs are a fun adaption to seed packets, providing a suitable growth medium the seedballs provide a selection of floral species suitable for all bees.
